Dear Attendees,
After completing a successful First Edition in 2022, Middle Eastern Alliance for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Congress (MEAPEN), the Second Edition will take place in AMMAN the Capital City of JORDAN on 20 & 21 May, 2023.
The congress aims to highlight the crucial values of parenteral and enteral nutrition (PEN) inpatient care and emphasize on the importance of clinical nutrition practices among specialized healthcare providers such as physicians, pharmacists, clinical dietitians, and nurses.
The second edition of the MEAPEN will feature various topics and workshops that tackle PEN in hospitalization settings, outpatient settings, and home care settings. All of which will foster the practices of clinical nutrition within healthcare organizations and community services.

Mrs. Wafaa Helmi Ayesh is the Previous Director of Clinical Nutrition Department for Dubai Health Authority-Dubai. She graduated from the medical Allied Sciences Yarmouk University, Jordan, before gaining an M.Sc in Food Science and Nutrition from Clayton University in the USA. Her other qualifications include Diploma in Nutrition from the American Association of Continuing Medical Education, the European ESPEN Diploma in Nutrition & Metabolism and Diploma in Therapeutic Nutrition. She has also set the Accredited Curriculum in the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, and is Adjunct and Advisory Board Member as well as part-time lecturer for College of Health Science in University of Sharjah.

Dr. AlMusawi is an Associate Professor in Medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland-Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI-MUB) in the Kingdom of Bahrain. He had been a speaker in many local, regional and international conferences in his areas of interest which are multi-drug resistant Gram negative bacteria, fungal infections and antimicrobial stewardship in intensive care units, as well as an instructor to many critical care courses. He had received several awards and published widely in the field of infectious disease and critical care medicine.

Prof. Laviano currently works at department of clinical medicine Sapienza University, in Rome, Italy. He is a member of many associations and societies, such as, a member of ESPEN, AAAS (AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE), a member New York Academy of sciences and a member of South African of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, Member, Editorial Advisory Board of Nutrition, Abstract reviewer of the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) and many others. Dr. Laviano’s main research interests are: regulation of food intake under physiological and pathological conditions, disease-associated anorexia and cachexia, hyperphagia and obesity, impact and treatment of hospital malnutrition. Prof. Laviano has over 140 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has authored more than 50 book chapters and more than 200 abstracts presented at National & International congresses. Prof. Laviano has delivered more than 200 invited lectures in both National and International events. He is also one of the authors of the most recent 2016 ESPEN guidelines on Nutrition in Cancer patients, as well as the 2017 ESPEN expert group recommendations for action against cancer related malnutrition.

PhD, RD, Professor; Dietician
Dr. Carla Prado is a Professor at the University of Alberta in Canada and a Campus Alberta Innovates (CAIP) Chair in Nutrition, Food and Health. She is the Director of the Human Nutrition Research Unit, a state-of-the-art research and training facility. Dr. Prado is an expert in assessing nutritional status through the precise measurement of body composition and energy metabolism. Her research has shown for the first time the prevalence and clinical implications of sarcopenic obesity (concurrent appearance of low muscle and high fat) in cancer, and has provided evidence of the independent effect of body composition on cancer recurrence, treatment and survival. The focus of her current research program is to develop targeted nutrition interventions for the prevention and treatment of low muscle mass in patients with cancer. She is currently the Principal Investigator of three randomized controlled trials investigating the impact of nutrition intervention on body composition and health. Dr. Prado holds a dietitian title from both Canada and Brazil. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Alberta, Canada, and has completed further training at the Cross Cancer Institute (Canada), the National Institutes of Health (USA) and Newcastle University (UK). She is currently a member of the GLIM Body Composition Working Group, and the Sarcopenic Obesity Consensus Group (ESPEN/EASO). She is an Associate Editor of Clinical Nutrition and the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle. Dr. Prado is a recipient of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40, a prestigious award that celebrates exceptional young Canadian leaders of all sectors.

Dr. Mo’ez –Al-Islam Faris was born in Kuwait, and holds Jordanian citizenship. Dr. Faris got his three higher university degrees from the University of Jordan in the field of human nutrition. Recently, Dr. Faris has been completed Harvard Medical School/ Global Clinical Scholar Research Training (GCSRT) Program. Dr. Faris works now as an associate professor at the Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics/the University of Sharjah, with eighteen years’ experience in the academic field in four Arabian universities. Dr. Faris published more than 120 original research, review, and meta-analysis articles in scientific peer-reviewed journals, in addition to book chapters, and conference proceedings, and abstracts. Dr. Faris provided the community with public articles in popular magazines in different Arab countries. He is an author and co-author in a list of scientific and academic refereed books and participated in editing and reviewing several important Arabic books in nutrition. Recently, he had published his refereed scientific books on Nutrition and Cancer and Foods of the Holy Quran from a Modern Nutritional perspective. Dr. Faris holds the research Award of the University of Sharjah for the academic year 2021, the State Award for the Excellent Ph.D. Student from Jordan 2010, and The Best Ph.D. Dissertation Award at the University of Jordan in 2009. Dr. Faris presented in more than thirty local, regional and international conferences and workshops in the areas of human nutrition and dietetics, in addition to providing dozens of lectures in cultural and scientific societies, as well as attending different mass media. Dr. Faris is a member and a founder of several associations and professional societies and specialized committees, and a reviewer for many international journals.

Fatima Al-Haddad is a Clinical Dietitian from the Kingdom of Bahrain. She has been working as a Clinical Dietitian in the Salmaniya Medical Complex for the past 17 years. Fatima obtained her BSc. in Nutrition with a Major in Dietetics from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, after which she went on to earn a Fulbright Scholarship and obtained a MSc. in Public Health Nutrition with a Minor in Public Health from the University of Knoxville-Tennessee in the United States. She has a passion for infant and child nutrition and her focus on diabetes was the drive behind her PhD thesis from the University of Surrey, United Kingdom. Her area of research focuses on child health with an emphasis on evidence-based strategies for improving health outcomes in these populations.
